111 years of geography and built environment research available free to UK education and research
Taylor & Francis and JISC Collections have today agreed to make the Taylor & Francis Geography, Planning, Urban & Environment Online Archive, a collection of 28 journal titles available to universities, colleges and research councils in the UK. Researchers, teaching staff and students can have free access to over 100 years of content and 1272 archive volumes covering architecture, building studies, environmental studies, geography, housing studies, planning, property management, transport, urban design and studies.
This agreement will provide access to an important archive that would only have been available at a small number of institutions. Researchers across the UK will benefit from ease of access to the archive online and save both time and money travelling and reviewing the archive at other institutions. Some highlights from the archive include European Planning Studies, published with the Association of European Schools of Planning; the Journal of Architecture, jointly published with the Royal Institute of British Architects; Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, first published in 1958; Landscape Research, first published in 1968; Regional Studies, first published in 1967 and the Scottish Geographical Journal, the official journal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
Jessica Vivian, Editorial Director at Taylor & Francis Group Journals states, “It is a privilege for the Taylor & Francis Group to work with JISC Collections to enable access to our significant archive collection by the purchase of the Geography, Planning, Urban & Environment Online Archive. The Archive will provide researchers with an extensive range of journal backfiles (back to 1885 in one instance) that are easily searchable and quickly accessible in electronic format thus saving vital research time and opening up the vault to previously hard-to-find academic research material.”
This significant archive has been purchased at a national level by JISC Collections following an open and transparent procurement process, with criteria set by the academic community. All of the bids received from publishers were marked and ranked by the community according to their academic quality, value for money and the willingness of the participants to meet the user needs of the JISC community. The central purchase provides institutions with the freedom to choose to provide access based on the needs of their staff, students and researchers rather than based on whether they can afford them, thus continuing to enrich the research experience.
Liam Earney, Team Manager at JISC Collections said, “We are delighted to offer the Taylor & Francis Geography, Planning, Urban & Environment Online Archive to our community as this brings significant cost savings for institutions, saves researchers time by searching for the articles they need online and can further enhance the research experience by stimulating the discovery of articles that may have otherwise been overlooked, forgotten or ignored. Content from this Archive can also be used by students for their coursework and incorporated in teaching and learning materials across different subjects and courses. This agreement is part of our ongoing commitment to widening access to essential research material, especially for some of the more specialist subject areas, which many institutions simply would not ordinarily be able to afford.”
Institutions who would like to access to the Taylor & Francis Geography, Planning, Urban and Environment Online Archive will need to complete a licence agreement. For further information, please go to http://www.jisc-collections.ac.uk/catalogue/tga.
