A century of arts, humanities and social science research available free to UK education and research

JISC Collections and ProQuest agreement makes 80 journals free to universities, colleges and research councils in the UK

ProQuest and JISC Collections have agreed to make a collection of 80 journals from ProQuest’s Periodicals Archive Online available to universities, colleges and Research Councils in the UK.  The collection, spanning more than 100 years of content, will be freely available to institutions digitally in full archival format in such subject areas as the arts, business, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, politics, psychology and the social sciences – a print equivalent of 1,100 linear feet of shelving.

“We’re deeply proud of the historical content that’s available through Periodicals Archive Online,” said Mary Sauer-Games, vice president of publishing for ProQuest.  “JISC Collections’ choice of this content to support the U.K.’s academic community is an honour.”

“This agreement will provide significant benefits for researchers, who will not only save time by searching for the full text of the articles they need online, they can uncover essential material that may have otherwise been undiscovered to open new avenues for research” said Liam Earney, Team Manager at JISC Collections.  “Material from this resource can also be used by students for their coursework and incorporated in teaching and learning materials across a diverse range of subjects and courses. This is part of our ongoing commitment to widening access to essential research material that many institutions simply would not ordinarily be able to afford and we are delighted to offer Periodicals Archive Online to our community.”

The collection will be accessible via ProQuest’s acclaimed Periodicals Archive Online platform, which uses a search engine known for its powerful, accurate searching.  The 288,006 articles contained in the collection encompass the full backfile of each journal, with content dating from 1891 through 2000.

The content is a subset of Periodicals Archive Online, a major online resource for the full runs of periodicals in the arts, humanities and social sciences.  Periodicals Archive Online covers a wide range of subjects in the arts, humanities and social sciences – with 37 different defined subject  areas (from Ancient Civilisations to Sociology, by way of Business, Economics, History, Literature, Psychology, Theology and others). The complete database is strongly international with the inclusion of many non-English-language titles.

Institutions wanting access to Periodicals Archive Online will need to complete a licence agreement. For further information, please go to http://www.jisc-collections.ac.uk/catalogue/pao.
