JISC Banding

Information for Library & Information Staff

In 2006, the JISC established a mutual trading company called JISC Collections. The mission of the company is to negotiate with owners of digital content and publishers of online information to provide the UK further and higher education community with a range of online resources in the support of education and research. The company is chaired by Mr David House, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Brighton.

Institutional Membership

All UK higher and further education institutions and research councils are eligible for free membership to JISC Collections. Membership will ensure that your institution continues to take advantage of JISC negotiated and funded agreements. To learn more about the advantages of becoming a member or to find out if your institution has already registered, please see our Membership pages.

Moving from Athens Authentication to the UK Access Management Federation

JISC set up the UK Access Management Federation in September 2006. This move away from Athens Authentication to a new access management system based on Shibboleth technology provides for easier access to online resources, enhanced opportunities for collaborations and greater control by institutions of access management procedures. The Athens service will not be funded by JISC after July 2008. It is therefore important that institutions are fully aware of the transition process and what steps will need to be taken to become members of the UK Access Management Federation.
