Launched in June 2004, BBC Motion Gallery makes available content
from the BBC archive for the very first time. Footage has been
derived from broadcast programming and, in many cases, from
programme rushes thus much of the content has never been seen
before.
BBC Motion Gallery, a division of BBC Worldwide Limited, offers
media professionals in advertising, television, film and corporate
video production access to the worlds most comprehensive collection
of high-quality motion imagery for licensing worldwide. With more
than 500 million feet of film and 300,000 hours of video, BBC
Motion Gallery encompasses a wealth of content covering natural
history, sport, news, locations, art, music, celebrities, culture
and more.
BBC Motion Gallery also exclusively represents a number of
additional archives, both broadcast and more niche collections. On
the broadcast side these include CBS News (US), ABC (Australia) and
NHK (Japan) which offers superb HD content. Other collections
represented include Huntley (social history), Nugus / Martin
(historical / war footage), Ripcurl (surfing and lifestyle) and The
Urban Freestyler (football skills). BBC Motion Gallery operates
from offices in London and regional offices in New York, Los
Angeles, Toronto, Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Paris.
The Motion Gallery website has 30,000 clips ready for download.
These clips are typically 5 to 20 seconds in duration and each clip
is watermarked and has an individual identification number. Users
can search by title (eg sunset, dog, countryside) or by concept /
idea (eg teamwork, success, failure). A search can be a simple one
word activity or users can link words to come up with more detailed
and precise results.
An individual clip would be sold commercially at a minimum price of
£100.
Content is constantly being refreshed and new clips are added at a
rate of 1000 per month. Future plans for the website include :
- Many clips
(especially those which are news-related) will have sound added
(Sep / Oct 2006)
- Themed
royalty free (stock footage material) packages will be added (Sep /
Oct 2006)
- Further
archive representations will be announced, including additional
broadcasters, independent companies and specialist collections
BBC Motion Gallery would welcome feedback from each educational
establishment with regards to content areas of interest.
