The RefWorks-COS Collection

The RefWorks-COS Collection is a suite of online abstract and index databases and research management tools comprising RefAware, RefWorks and the COS Research Support Suite.

Content description

RefWorks

RefWorks provides solutions for research management, writing and collaboration. Managing information, writing research papers and creating bibliographies can be a time-consuming, complex task, often involving the use of different systems and applications. RefWorks provides users with a simple to use online tool, to capture, organize, store, share, and manipulate data generated by multiple information resources. The continued introduction of new features within the service, such as a RSS feed reader and RefShare, a tool for the web dissemination and publication of databases, expands upon the services integration of the newest technologies in order to support researchers with effective tools.

RefAware

RefAware is a personal, web-based current awareness services that alerts researchers when new papers or articles in their fields of interest are available, sometimes pre-publication. Using RSS feed technology, RefAware scans the Internet to access and gather metadata on newly published information. Users create search profiles that reflect their interests, and as soon as a new matching article is available, RefAware sends an email alert with a link to the new information. RefAware monitors over 9,000 publications, including major peer-reviewed journals and non-peer-reviewed sources.

Date range

RefWorks : n/a, as this is an information management tool

RefAware: as a current awareness tool, RefAware holds data for 90 days.

COS Funding Opportunities: this database contains only currently available funding opportunities. Once deadlines pass, they are dropped from the system.

COS Scholar Universe: this database contains data going back to 2002, and will maintain data indefinitely. When it comes to our attention that a scholar is deceased, it is noted on the record, but the profile remains in the database.

Papers Invited: this database contains only currently available funding opportunities. Once deadlines pass, they are dropped from the system.

Updates

RefWorks – this resource contains no provided data to be updated. The system and features are updated regularly and automatically.

RefAware – this resource continuously monitors its over 9,000 sources and alerts users to information matching their criteria.

COS Funding Opportunities – this database is updated continually and is updated each day, Monday – Friday.

COS Scholar Universe – new profiles are added regularly, several times per month. All weblinks are checked monthly to be sure that they are good. Each profile is reviewed approximately every eight months to check for new publications or positions. PLUS, with each search, COS Scholar Universe also searches weblinks in matching profiles to report any new information on those webpages.

Papers Invited – this database is updated approximately three times per month with several hundred new opportunities.

Publisher's selection policy

RefWorks - as this is an information management resource, there is no selection policy.

RefAware - this service uses a proprietary technology to work with RSS feeds, so any resource included in our source set must have an RSS feed. The over 9,000 sources include academic peer-reviewed journals large and small, non-refereed publications, high impact-factor publications, specialty niche publications, academic websites and blogs, and newspapers. Users may request sources for inclusion, but they must have an RSS feed and they must provide academic, scholarly or professional-level editorial content.

COS Funding Opportunities - we seek and solicit funding opportunities from a broad spectrum of organizations public or private, large or small, academic, corporate, non-profit, from any country, in any discipline. However, only opportunities that are for advanced-level academic or professional work are included in the database. For example, it does not include scholarships or community grants. Anyone may suggest a funding opportunity for inclusion in the database, and that suggestion is subject to standard, rigorous editorial practices.

COS Scholar Universe - we gather information from a variety of sources, including publicly available information, information from academic and publishing partners, and from researchers themselves. Data is then submitted to a proprietary editorial process that evaluates the data and vets its accuracy. We strive for a 100% accuracy rate in the information in the profiles. When seeking new scholars to add to data, we seek active faculty members, active researchers, and active scholarly authors. Anyone can suggest a scholar for inclusion in the database, and that suggestion is subject to standard, rigorous editorial practices.

COS Papers Invited - we seek and solicit calls for papers and posters opportunities from conferences and organizations of any size, in any discipline, and in any country. Also included are notifications of special editions from scholarly journals. Anyone can suggest a conference or call for papers for inclusion in the database, and that suggestion is subject to standard, rigorous editorial practices.
