Historical Ordnance Survey maps covering Great Britain from 1843 to 1995 have been purchased by JISC and are available to UK Higher and Further Education institutions and Research Councils. The content is free in perpetuity, but a fee applies for access via the Digimap platform.
The maps can be viewed on screen, printed at a range of scales, and downloaded for use with application software such as GIS and CAD.
JISC and EDINA are pleased to offer Historic Digimap providing access to the valuable historic Ordnance Survey map collection online. The maps are digital scans of Ordnance Survey paper map sheets including:
- all available County Series maps at 1:2,500 and 1:10560 scales published between 1843 and 1939
- all available National Grid maps at 1:1,250, 1:2,500 and 1:10560/10,000 scales published from 1945 and before the introduction of the Ordnance Survey's digital Land-Line product in the 1990s
Historic Digimap is part of the Digimap suite of on-line mapping facilities. As such, its look and feel will be familiar to existing Digimap users but intuitive to all, regardless of their level of experience with maps.
Users can view maps through their web browser, save maps for printing and download the historic map data for use in geographical information systems.
