British Education Index, Australian Education Index and Eric (Education Literature Datasets)

A complete and integrated suite of bibliographic databases of education and training periodicals from the three principal producing English-language agencies. ERIC is produced by the Education Resources Information Center from the US Department of Education. British Education Index is produced by the BEI office within Leeds University and Australian Education Index is produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research.

Content description

The collection is available on the DataStarWeb platform which has been optimised for the UK Academic Community. These databases can be combined seamlessly with other subject databases on the DataStarWeb platform, particularly those in the health arena which offers strong possibilities for subjects such as psychology.

The core education databases are suitable for Education and general academic use. Three hundred additional databases covering a wide variety of subject areas are available to place within the interface

Additional content

Three hundred databases are available on the Dialog DataStar platform. These cover a wide variety of databases in many subject areas. All can be viewed at: http://library.dialog.com/datasheets. Dialog are happy to advise on databases for particular subject areas. Dialog will only show users the databases institutions have chosen on subscription and can group the databases into subject tabs for departments.

An admin fee of £30 will be charged on all subscription fees over £600.

How does JISC Banding and Charging work?

For details on subscription and licensing terms, please go to the subscription instructions.

The agreement will be for two years, running from 1 August 2009 to 31 July 2011. Institutions can subscribe at any time. The Sub-Licensee may terminate this Agreement on 31st July 2010 by giving JISC Collections sixty days (60) notice to that effect.

Functionality and standards compliance

Full text linking

The Dialog eLinks Manager is an administrator module allowing institutions to directly control outgoing links to many resources. This can include: electronic full text journals, local print holdings, library catalogues and resolvers. All common industry standards are supported: OpenURL, SFX, MetaLib. XML output is to be released shortly.

Federated searching

All Dialog DataStar databases are available though the SOAP api.

SOAP api is the next generation of web services and is more reliable and powerful than Z39.50.

Metadata standards

All databases support individual thesauri where available.

Search options

All databases can be searched individually or across databases. Some search features:

  • Saved Search

  • On screen limits
  • "Repeat" in another database

  • Delete individual or whole set histories
  • Limit by date
  • Choice of searching from any database field(s), allowing searching by journal name, author, etc.

Usage statistics

Usage statistics are provided within the support site: http://resource.dialog.com. They include number of logins, database searches and document views defined by the admin username, so they are anonymous. Currently investigating COUNTER.

Authentication

Authentication via the UK Access Management Federation will be available from 2010. Currently, authentication is via Athens.
