Content description

Complete collection

The complete collection includes both sub-collections, with over 2,700 downloadable essays taken from 285 titles of the Cambridge Companions series.

This resource provides introductions to major writers, artists, philosophers, topics and periods in the subject areas of literature, philosophy, classics, religion and cultural studies, in a functional, cross-searchable online environment.

Literature and classics

The literature and classics sub-collection includes over 1,500 essays written by experts and designed for student readers. It offers comprehensive and accessible essays on major authors, periods and genres.

For the author Companions each writer is placed in literary and historical context. Each author's major works are analysed, either in separate chapters or grouped according to theme, and their influence on later writers assessed.

The generic and topical Companions cover periods of English literature and literary genres.

The Companions to classical civilisation examine key periods and aspects of the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome.

Philosophy, religion and culture

The philosophy, religion and culture sub-collection includes essays which are intended to serve as reference works for an inter-disciplinary audience of students and non-specialists.

Addressing topics and figures ranging from Plato through Kant to Habermas, and philosophical movements such as the Scottish Enlightenment and German Idealism, this online collection contains over 1,000 downloadable essays taken from the Cambridge Companions to philosophy, religion and culture.

Shakespeare Survey

Shakespeare Survey is a yearbook of Shakespeare studies and production. Since 1948 it has published the best international scholarship in English and many of its essays have become classics of Shakespeare criticism.

Each volume is devoted to a theme, or play, or group of plays; each also contains a section of reviews of that year's textual and critical studies, and of the year's major British performances.

The online version contains all 60 editions of Shakespeare Survey published so far. Volume 61 will be added on publication, due in late October 2008
