In early 2011, JISC will launch a new multimedia platform offering a single point of access to a wealth of digital image, film and sound content.  While this platform is under development, we are offering current Education Image Gallery subscribers an interim service.

The new platform will offer a wide range of benefits:

  • All content will be free-at-the-point-of-use, and licensed for use in education and research.
  • The user interface will be easy to use.
  • Different collections will be fully cross searchable, enabling users to source content from a wide range of content providers with ease.
  • Extensive metadata will be available to enhance search and browse, and thumbnail images will be displayed in results lists.

It will include access to both free and paid-for content:

NewsFilm Online – 3,000 hours of news stories and cinema newsreels taken from the ITN/ Reuters archive.  Over 60,000 clips are available covering significant historical events that shaped the 20th and 21st century such as the the first interview with Nelson Mandela, and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. (Access to NewsFilm Online will be free to all UK HE and FE)

Digital Images for Education – over 500 hours of film and 56,000 images capturing local, UK and world history during the last 25 years. Films range from footage of Gorbachev’s accession to power in the Soviet Union in 1985 to the financial crisis of 2009, and powerful raw footage of the 9/11 attacks is included, as well as coverage of key issues such as deforestation and global warming.  Photographs from a wide variety of providers range from nineteenth-century life in the Scottish Highlands to contemporary youth culture. (There will be a charge for access to this content)

Film and Sound Online – 2,000 film and sound files from the 17 collections digitised for education and research covering topics from Shakespeare, medicine, war and philosophy. (There will be a charge for access to this content)

While our new platform is under development, we are will be offering current subscribers to the Education Image Gallery an interim service. Here is the timeline:

1 August 2010 - 30 September 2010: subscribers will continue to have access to the Getty images.

1 October 2010: The Getty images will be removed and replaced with the 50,000 images that we have purchased for the Digital Images for Education project.  These key images bring to life “Our History” – in particular, film and digital images that capture local history, UK history and world history during the last 25 years.  Find out more about this new content

Important notes:

The sub-licence for Getty images content allows current subscribers to keep in perpetuity print and electronic copies and adaptations of images downloaded that are placed in VLEs, coursework, teaching packs etc for ever.

We therefore suggest that you check that your image collections are up to date, and that you notify your teaching staff that, should they require images for the next academic year, they should download these prior to 30 September 2010.

Please note that the licence does not allow you to further adapt or create new images from the images you already have.
