In August 2011, JISC Collections together with EDINA will launch JISC MediaHub, part of the JISC eCollections service, which will provide a single point of access to three major multimedia archives purchased on behalf of members. It enables cross searching and exploration of over 3,500 hours of film and 50,000 images from the following archives:
JISC MediaHub will aggregate all the media content that has been purchased by JISC on behalf of the education community: Film & Sound Online, Digital Images for Education (currently delivered via Education Image Gallery) and NewsFilm Online. It will also enable users to search freely for items in a growing number of other important collections, such as the British Library Archival Sound Recordings, VADS, ARKive and Scran.
Film & Sound Online – 2,000 film and sound files from the 17 collections digitised for education and research covering topics from Shakespeare, medicine, war and philosophy.
Digital Images for Education – over 500 hours of film and 56,000 images capturing local, UK and world history during the last 25 years. Films range from footage of Gorbachev’s accession to power in the Soviet Union in 1985 to the financial crisis of 2009, and powerful raw footage of the 9/11 attacks is included, as well as coverage of key issues such as deforestation and global warming. Photographs from a wide variety of providers range from nineteenth-century life in the Scottish Highlands to contemporary youth culture.
NewsFilm Online – 3,000 hours of news stories and cinema newsreels taken from the ITN/ Reuters archive. Over 60,000 clips are available covering significant historical events that shaped the 20th and 21st century such as the first interview with Nelson Mandela, and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
What do you need to do?
From March 2011, EDINA will contact NFO site representatives to invite them to preview JISC Mediahub. As part of this preview, you will automatically be given free trial access to all the content on JISC Mediahub for four months (till 31 July 2011).
In addition, JISC Collections will be in contact with subscribing institutions shortly to inform you of the new licensing arrangement and fees for JISC Mediahub which will come into effect on the 1 August 2011.
We encourage you to take advantage of this free trial period to explore the new platform and the content and to feedback your comments to ourselves and EDINA. As it will be a preview version, we really welcome your comments to inform the future developments to JISC Mediahub.
While the free trial period is taking place EDINA will continue to run the existing NFO platform so you will be able to access both - this way, you can manage the transfer of links and communication to your users in your own time.
What charges will there be?
On the 1 August 2011, JISC Mediahub will become part of the JISC eCollections service managed by JISC Collections in partnership with EDINA and Mimas that will consist of three new content platforms (one of which is JISC Mediahub). The new platforms will provide access to the images, film, journal archive and historical book content purchased by JISC in perpetuity on behalf of the education community.
- JISC Historic Books – The full text or page images of every book published in England before 1800 (currently available in two separate collections, Early English Books Online and Eighteenth-Century Collections Online), plus the full text of over 65,000 19th Century books from the British Library
- JISC Mediahub – over 150,000 photos and more than 500 hours of moving-image content, including news film from major agencies such as ITN, Getty, and AP Archive, and historic newsreel footage dating back to the early years of the 20th century as well as the ability to search freely for items in a growing number of other important collections, such as the British Library Archival Sound Recordings, VADS, ARKive and Scran
- JISC Journal Archives – more than 3.75 million scholarly journal articles from the archives of major publishers such as Oxford University Press, The Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry
However, you can continue to access the NewsFilm Online content for free if you decide you only want to have access to this content. You will still access NewsFilm Online on the new JISC Mediahub platform.
