Skills2Learn: E-Learning & Virtual Reality Simulation Programmes

In collaboration with FE colleges, trade associations and with support from Sector Skills Councils, Skills2Learn has developed a suite of e-learning training programmes cover a number of vocational subjects.

These e-learning programmes are fully interactive, use high quality 2D and 3D graphics, have audio and video and are supported by information gathered from top experts in the field. In addition, these programmes contain the unique Skills2Learn virtual reality environments which offer a completely new way of teaching and learning. The software allows users to learn at their own pace.

The programmes are provided on CD-ROM to be installed on Web server or VLE which can be accessed online via intranet or internet via web browser. Content is supplied in SCORM 1.2 format, and files that can be uploaded to a standard web server.

The current programmes include:

1. Construction

Bricklaying

This interactive training programme has been designed to give users an understanding of the bricklaying process and technical aspects of the trade. It covers the technicalities of bricklaying as well as looking at sustainability, health and safety and functional skills.

Plastering

This interactive programme is designed to give users an understanding of the plastering trade. It covers the technicalities of plastering as well as looking at sustainability, health and safety and functional skills.

Painting & Decorating

This e-learning programme is designed to give users an understanding of the painting and decorating trade. It covers the technicalities of painting & decorating as well as looking at sustainability, health and safety and functional skills.

Carpentry & Joinery

This advanced e-learning programme is designed to give users an understanding of the carpentry trade. It covers the technicalities of carpentry & joinery as well as looking at sustainability, health and safety and functional skills.

Wall & Floor Tiling

This e-learning programme is designed to give users an understanding of the wall and floor tiling trade. It covers the technicalities of wall & floor tiling as well as looking at sustainability, health and safety and functional skills.

2. Electrical

Electrotechnical Technology

This advanced e-learning programme is designed for learners and tutors studying for the 2330 Technical & Part P Defined Scope Certificate. It is based on fully interactive multimedia with audio, video, text using 2D and 3D animation and virtual reality. The programme consists of eight ‘tutorial-based’ e-Learning modules with end assessments and five scenarios.

3. Gas & Plumbing

Gas and Plumbing

This application, designed by e-learning experts for the education sector, is aligned to the core curriculum and syllabus at technical certificate and NVQ/SVQ Level 2/3. It is based on multi-award winning virtual reality technology and has been developed using the latest in 3D animation, graphics, video clips and sound.

4. Licensed Retail Compliance

Licensed Retail Compliance Package

This packaged bundle of e-learning programmes has been designed to provide an understanding of the issues and regulations in five key areas of compliance for the licensed retail sector for the UK. By completing all modules in the package, learners will gain an understanding of the five key areas involved in ensuring that a business meets the legal requirements. This includes the five subject specific modules listed below.

Fire Safety (Licensed Retail)

This module covers the key underpinning knowledge regarding fire safety within the licensed retail sector for the UK. By completing this module, learners will understand the key areas of fire safety to ensure a business meets the legal requirements.

Food Safety (Licensed Retail)

This module covers the key knowledge of food safety within the UK's licensed retail sector. By completing this module, learners will be able to identify the legal responsibilities of a business and food handlers to serve food safely.

Health and Safety (Licensed Retail)

This module covers the key underpinning knowledge regarding health and safety within the licensed retail sector for the UK. By completing this module, learners will be able to understand the key areas that a business needs to be aware of regarding health and safety.

Human Resource Legal Requirements (Licensed Retail)

This module covers the key underpinning knowledge regarding human resource (HR) legal requirements within the UK's licensed retail sector. By completing this module, learners will be able to understand the key HR legal requirements of a business.

Responsible Retailing (Licensed Retail)

This module covers the key underpinning knowledge regarding responsible retailing within the UK's licensed retail sector. By completing this module, learners will be able to understand the key areas of responsible retailing to ensure a business operates with the law.

5. Renewable Energy

Introduction to Renewable Energies

This programme has been developed in alignment with the Qualifications and Credit Framework. It is designed to give users a thorough insight into renewable technologies. It covers the different types of heat and electricity producing technologies, the selection process plus the incentives available and the policies that apply to installations.

Solar Thermal Hot Water

This e-learning programme is designed for colleges and training centres, and is aimed at apprentices and engineers who wish to advance their career and learn how to install solar domestic hot water systems. The programme consists of eight tutorial modules with end assessments and five 3D virtual reality scenarios.

Solar Photovoltaic

This virtual reality based e-learning programme covers everything users need to know about Solar Photovoltaic (PV) installation. The programme is intended to facilitate learning and enhance the understanding of the otherwise complex solar photovoltaic concepts as well as instil good working practices for system design, installation, commissioning and handover.

Heat Pumps

This virtual reality based e-learning programme covers in a visually engaging manner everything users need to know about heat pump principles. The programme is intended to facilitate learning and enhance the understanding of the otherwise complex heat pump concepts as well as instill good working practices for system design, installation, commissioning and handover.

Building Heat Loss Calculator

A step-by-step calculator that allows users to calculate the annual heat loss for domestic dwellings situated anywhere in Europe. It allows users to specify variables such as size and construction materials to calculate the heat loss index. Selected options can then be modified to determine the effects of changes on the heat loss.

Solar Radiation Calculator

A step-by-step calculator that allows users to calculate direct and diffused solar radiation at any time and place on Earth. It allows users to specify variables such as latitude, the time of year and the time of day. The results provide an estimate maximum, mean and total annual solar radiation intercepted as well as the maximum heat loads.

6. Health and Safety

Health and Safety

An important training programme modeled on national qualification criteria, including Technical Certificate and NVQ/SVQ level 2. Designed to improve Health and Safety in the workplace, it covers a range of topics such as clothing and equipment, gloves, safety helmets, ear defenders, and footwear used to avoid injury in the workplace.

7. Health & Care

Child Protection

This e-learning programme covers in a visually engaging manner an in depth understanding of the issues and procedures required for Level 1 assessment in Child Protection.

8. Welding / Fabrication

Welding & Fabrication

This programme has been aligned to the Fabrication & Welding Suite and the Performing Engineering Operations Suite of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) so can be used for study towards certification.

9. Automotive

E-Automotive- Light Vehicle Electrical and Transmission Systems

This e-learning programme is designed to enhance user's understanding of the fundamentals of the Electrical and Transmission systems of a light vehicle. It is developed in alignment with units from Level 2 of The Institute of the Motor Industry's National Occupational Standards for Maintenance & Repair - Light Vehicle. It also looks at sustainability, health and safety and vehicle inspection.

10. Nursing

Nursing

This programme is aligned with year three of the Adult Nursing Degree and is compliant with Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements, so it can be used for study towards certification.
