Full Description

Times Digital Archive:

The Times Digital Archive is a full image online archive of every page published by The Times (London) from 1785-1985. The text within the images is fully searchable at the article level. Users can easily search news articles, obituaries, advertising and classifieds - virtually everything that appeared in the newspaper. Results are displayed at the article level and users may view the article - or the full page upon which it appeared.

The resource covers the entire full text of The Times (London) from 1785 to 1985, but it does not include the Sunday Times. It includes 8 million articles spanning 200 years.

The Burney Collection:

The newspapers and news pamphlets, gathered by the Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817) represent the largest single collection of 17th and 18th century English news media available from the British Library. The collection includes more than 1000 pamphlets, proclamations, newsbooks and newspapers from the period, including the first successful London daily and first illustrated newspaper. The collection covers more than 200 years of accounts from newspapers from England, Ireland, Scotland and a selection of papers from British colonies in the Americas and Asia. Students and researchers can conduct full-text searches of nearly 1 million pages - some 1,270 titles. The archive helps researchers chart the development of the newspaper beginning with irregularly published transcriptions of Parliamentary debates and proclamations to coffee house newsbooks.

A sample list of newspapers available through the Burney Collection includes:

  • British Journal
  • British Chronicle
  • Evening Post
  • General Advertiser
  • Hoey's Dublin Mercury
  • London Chronicle
  • London Morning Penny Post
  • Original Weekly Journal
  • Whitehall Evening Post

The Times is regarded as the most authoritative medium for political, legal, business and social news. Until now backfiles could only be accessed on microfilm. Gale® has taken The Times microfilm collection, scanning all the issues published between 1785 and 1985, and transformed them into high resolution digital format with searchable images. The Times Digital Archive (1785-1985) spans nearly a million pages and some ten million articles. To that is added technology that can read the original and sometimes erratic typesetting and locate words or phrases across the centuries. By being online, the Archive is now easily searchable.
